Biking

Bikes get you around campus faster, offer you an easy form of exercise, and are less expensive than paying for parking. There are many free-to-use bike racks on the UNM campus. UNM’s Interactive Campus Map provides an overview of bike rack and bicycle locker locations.

  • UNM Parking and Transportation Services (PATS) provides 94 bike lockers to rent per year. Weekend rentals are also available at $20 from Friday to Monday morning.
  • The Outdoor Adventure Center runs the UNM 5K Commuter Club, which is open to any UNM student, staff, or faculty who commutes, even occasionally, by bicycle to UNM. 5K Commuters commit to bike commuting to and from UNM a total of 5,174 miles at 5,174 (UNM’s elevation) at their own pacing.
  • The Outdoor Adventure Center also hosts the Lobo Bike Shop, a full-service repair bike shop that also offers rental bikes at $10/day.

Mass Transit

UNM is well situated to take advantage of FREE mass transit options run by the City of Albuquerque.

  • ABQ Ride and Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) have bus stops surrounding UNM’s campus. All ABQ Ride buses have bicycle racks, so it is possible to bike to the bus stop, ride the bus to UNM, and bike to where you need to be on campus.
  • The NM Rail Runner also stops at the Alvarado Transportation Center, located in downtown Albuquerque close to campus. From the Alvarado Transportation Center, it is possible to get to UNM via the UNM Campus Shuttle, UNM Hospital Shuttle, or ABQ Ride bus.

Electric Vehicle Charging

Parking and Transportation Services (PATS) manages public Electric Vehicle Charging infrastructure at UNM. UNM has 24 dual-port Level 2 ChargePoint EV charging stations.

Albuquerque GoForth EV CarShare

GoForth Electric CarShare is located less than two miles from the UNM main campus and on the Central Avenue bus routes at the PAH! Hiland Plaza, 5000 Central Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM, 87108. Anyone over 21 years of age with a valid US driver's license, a relatively clean driving record, and a valid credit, debit, or bank card can rent one of two all-electric vehicles to test drive or use for errands, shopping or appointments. The first ride is free, but there is a small hourly fee ($4–5 per hour) for each additional ride.

To access these short-term EV rentals:

  • Download the MDO Carshare app from the App Store or Google Play. You can also create an account or make bookings in a web browser.
  • Register your account (when you register your account, a one-time fee of $10 will be charged to your payment card; this payment will be credited back to your account as driving credit toward your next trip).
  • Complete an onboarding call with a GoForth staff member (about 20 minutes).
  • Reserve the car.
  • Unlock the car from the app on your phone and drive it.
  • Return the car and plug it in.
